Janey Godley

Janey Godley (born 20 January 1961) is a Scottish comedian and writer. Her autobiography, ''Handstands in the Dark'', was a UK Top Ten best-seller and she was a 2006 Scotswoman of The Year finalist.〔Glasgow Evening Times, 13 October 2006〕 She was a columnist for the Monday edition of ''The Scotsman'' newspaper from 2007-09.
==Early life and career==
Brought up in Shettleston, Glasgow, at age 18, Godley, a Protestant, married Sean Storrie, also 18, whose nickname was "Mad Eyes", from a large Catholic family with ties to Glasgow's gangster underground. One of her new brothers-in-law spat on her at the reception. One of seven sons, Sean was raised with his brothers by George Storrie, an East Glasgow gangster. When "Old George" died, the Kray brothers sent a wreath. As of 2005, the couple was still together after 25 years of marriage. They have one child, a daughter, Ashley.〔(Profile ), janeygodley.com; accessed 4 October 2015.〕〔(Profile ), theguardian.com, 12 June 2005; accessed 4 October 2015.〕〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Joking apart )〕 Her 2005 autobiography ''Handstands in the Dark'' describes working-class Glasgow from 1961–94.
For 14 years, she ran a public house, the Weavers Inn (formerly the Nationalist Bar,〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Janey Godley )〕 later the Calton Bar〔News of the World, 12 March 2006〕) in the tough Calton area of Glasgow, where she staged the first performances by comedian and magician Jerry Sadowitz.〔Daily Record, 13 February 2004〕〔''Time Out'', 30 June–7 July 2004.〕
Later, she became a full-time stand-up herself, running comedy clubs including "Jesters" in Glasgow, and regularly compered at clubs in Glasgow, Manchester, and Liverpool. She played regular dates in the Netherlands and played in New York City.〔Sunday Post, 26 June 2005〕 She was, for a time, a BBC Radio Five Live entertainment correspondent, reporting for former British MP, Edwina Currie's ''Currie Club'' show from London, New York, and New Zealand.
